M.R.M. Parrott's 1998 novella, “To Lie Within the Moment”, set on Alabama's Gulf Coast, tells a shocking story of reaction to loss, in several styles of prose writing. Ten years after its release, the “literary, romantic, and decidedly erotic” book has been reissued on mrmparrott.com with an author's retrospective. “Had I been concerned,” he writes, “with the petty business of publishing, with merely pushing product, I would not have written such a challenging and dense, yet cathartic and rewarding novella.” The book has been well-received, he says, despite the jaw-dropping story, or perhaps, because of it.

In the retrospective, “Publishing Within the Moment”, Parrott describes how the choice to debut his publishing with an “ultra-sexy beach read”, independent of agents, editors and big media control, was “strange and socially scary”. Independent publishing is becoming more acceptable, he says, just as independent “musicians and filmmakers have slowly undercut the editorial power of record labels and film studios”. That power, Parrott says, is dystopian. Small press offers “a hint of danger,” Parrott writes, “a sense of what publishing is supposed to be - the distribution of ideas allowing us to think.” Parrott says, “we need to continue pushing for cultural acceptance of small press books and authors, independent ideas from independent minds.”
